Gare Smith chairs the Global Business and Human Rights Practice at the law firm Foley Hoag LLP, in Washington, DC, and serves as Co-Chair of the US Department of State’s Advisory Committee on Responsible Business Conduct. Prior to joining Foley Hoag, he was Vice President of Levi Strauss & Co. Mr. Smith has also served as Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary in the US Department of State’s Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights & Labor and was a US representative to the UN Human Rights Commission, the International Labor Organization, and the UN Working Group on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. A graduate of Johns Hopkins University and the University of Michigan Law School, he has authored three books on international human rights standards.
