Ohana Maitreya Fund
The Ohana Maitreya Fund for Buddhist Nuns (OM Fund) was started with the help of ICT, which continues to provide administrative support for the project. The OM Fund was created to address the need for educational and housing facilities for Tibetan Buddhist nuns living in India. “Ohana” is an Hawaiian word for an extended network of family and friends. “Maitreya” is the future Buddha who manifests as the Friend. ICT member Algienne Amrita launched the fund in November 2008, in Hawaii, in loving memory of her friend Barbara Jarvis.
The OM Fund is a capital campaign with the mandate to construct “shedras” for Buddhist nuns in India. Shedras are schools for the traditional nine-year course of study for Tibetan Buddhist monastics. Literacy in the Tibetan language is a crucial aspect of the survival of Tibetan Buddhist culture. ICT serves as a non-profit, tax-exempt umbrella for this special initiative by friends and family of Barbara Jarvis. For more information about the OM Fund and ways to donate, visit www.omfund.org.
