The newly formed Tibet-Gesprchskreis or Tibet-Intergroup of the German Bundestag convened last Wednesday for the first time since the German parliamentary elections in September 2005. At the invitation of the Gesprchskreis, Envoy of His Holiness the Dalai Lama Kelsang Gyaltsen gave an update on the recent developments in Sino-Tibetan relations and the human rights situation in Tibet. The parliamentarians expressed their full support for a peaceful solution of the issue of Tibet.

In the light of the recent dialogue efforts by the envoys of His Holiness the Dalai Lama it is of utmost importance that Tibet remain on the agenda of international and national politics. “We are grateful for the continuing efforts of the German members of parliament and hope they will play a strong role in German foreign policy-making.” said Kai Mueller, Executive Director of ICT-Germany, who attended the meeting at the German Bundestag in Berlin.

Holger Haibach of the CDU (Christian Democratic Union) chairs the informal group of parliamentarians and senior staff members of the German Bundestag. At the European level, the Intergroup for Tibet in the European Parliament continues to play a vital role in the struggle for human rights and self-determination of all Tibetans.
