Hear from the talented young Tibetans in ICT’s 2019 Tibetan Youth Leadership Program! Highlights of the program, which took place earlier this month, included meetings with distinguished foreign policy professionals in Congress and the State Department; lessons about the public policy role of activists, lobbyists and journalists; and discussions about how to build a network of future leaders in the Tibetan community.

ICT’s first Lodi Gyari fellows begin internships with Congress

Two Tibetan American college students are starting prized internships on Capitol Hill this week, thanks to a new Tibetan empowerment program from the International Campaign for Tibet. Tenzin Rangdol and Tenzin Nangsel are the first participants in the Washington Internship Program for Tibetan Americans, which ICT launched this year in an effort to give the burgeoning Tibetan American community meaningful experience in the US political process.

State Dept.’s 2018 religious freedom report calls out China’s systematic repression of Tibetan Buddhists

China continues to intensify its crackdown on Tibetan Buddhism, which last year included such alleged crimes as the sexual abuse of nuns, political re-education of monks and nuns, forced disappearances, torture and prolonged detentions without trial, according to the State Department’s latest international religious freedom report.

Two Tibetans imprisoned after calling for release of the Panchen Lama

A 20-year-old Tibetan man named Wangchen has been sentenced to more than four years in prison after reciting prayers and shouting slogans calling for the release of the Panchen Lama, who disappeared into Chinese custody as a child in 1995. Wangchen’s aunt, Acha Dolkar, was handed a prison term of one year and three months for her role in sharing news of Wangchen’s protest with contacts outside Tibet.

As the world marked the 30th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square Massacre, top US leaders highlighted China’s moral injustices and said Tiananmen will never be forgotten. They also drew attention to the continuing suffering in Tibet.

Dalai Lama expresses support for young Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg

The Dalai Lama has written to Greta Thunberg, age 16, who earned global acclaim for her dedication to climate activism, expressing his support for her efforts:

“I am also an ardent supporter of environmental protection. We humans are the only species with the power to destroy the earth as we know it. Yet, if we have the capacity to destroy the earth, so, too, do we have the capacity to protect it.

It is encouraging to see how you have opened the eyes of the world to the urgency to protect our planet, our only home. At the same time, you have inspired so many young brothers and sisters to join this movement.”

New US Tibet Negotiations Report shows lack of initiatives to encourage China to negotiate with Dalai Lama


At the end of May, the State Department submitted its Tibet Negotiations Report to Congress. The report raises concerns about the lack of autonomy, ongoing human rights violations and destruction of religious, linguistic and cultural heritage in Tibet.

However, in the section on “Steps Taken by Senior US Officials to Encourage Dialogue and Establish Conditions for a Sustainable Settlement,” there is only one reference to Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom Sam Brownback calling on Chinese authorities to resume dialogue with the Dalai Lama.
