Voice for the Voiceless

Dalai Lama sheds light on decades of efforts to save Tibet in new book

“Voice for the Voiceless,” the Dalai Lama’s new book, was released on March 11, 2025. It presents an inside look at the efforts Tibetans have made to pursue the Middle Way Approach, which calls for a negotiated solution to China’s occupation of their historically-independent country. It also lays out how important international support has been for champions of the Tibetan cause and shows how the United States Congress has played a pivotal role in pushing China to resume dialogue.

UNHRC

ICT welcomes states raising Tibet at UNHRC General Debate

On March 20, at the General Debate of the Human Rights Council, several delegations raised the human rights situation in Tibet. A group statement by 28 European states delivered by Poland read:

“The human rights situation in Tibet continues to be dire. Indicators of this include obligatory boarding schooling and the suppression of protests against hydropower projects. We are deeply concerned over reports that Tibetan schools teaching Tibetan language and culture have been shut down and that Chinese authorities have insisted that all students attend state schools where Tibetan is only taught as a stand-alone subject.”

Forced assimilation and erased history in China’s 14th Five-Year Plan on Tibet

This year China’s 14th five-year plan enters its final year. An analysis of the projects in Tibet shows that under the pretext of improving the lives of the Tibetan people, the plan is more aimed at fulfilling a two-pronged political objective: aggressively assimilate Tibetans into the Chinese society and use Tibet as a springboard for China’s further ambitions in South Asia.

ICT statement on US assistance to Tibetan programs

The Trump Administration has issued Executive Orders that reduce foreign assistance and freeze other international support programs. The broad implementation of this decision is severely affecting programs supporting Tibet and the Tibetan people. In response, the International Campaign for Tibet has been working in coordination with the Office of Tibet in Washington, DC to meet with Congressional and Administration officials reminding them about the importance of Tibet and the statutory requirement to help the Tibetan people.

Prayers for earthquake victims and statements of American support for Tibet at State Department Losar event

The arrival of Losar, the Tibetan New Year, saw the beginning of somber observances as Tibetans reflected on the recent earthquake inside Tibet and the death of Kasur Gyalo Thondup, His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s brother. As tradition holds, Losar also is a time to forward to the coming year as a time of hope and renewal.

NYC embraces Losar and Tibetan language, showing vitality of Tibetan communities in the United States

This year, New York City is adding another holiday to the list that determines administrative functions such as parking restrictions: Losar, the Tibetan New Year, which is now in the company of a select number of officially recognized holidays such as Christmas, Yom Kippur, Diwali, and Eid Al-Fitr. This represents a milestone for a community that only began to grow in earnest in the 1990s.

ICT statement for March 10 uprising

On the 66th anniversary of the 1959 Tibetans’ national uprising against China’s illegal occupation of their country, the International Campaign for Tibet called on the international community to strengthen their support to the Tibetan people’s peaceful struggle, including by pressuring the Chinese government to resume dialogue with the Tibetan leadership to resolve the Tibet China conflict.

Two Sessions

China’s 2025 Two Sessions show Tibetans are testing ground for a new CCP “ethnic unity” policy

This year’s annual political meetings in Beijing, popularly known as the Two Sessions, saw indication of not only continued clampdown of Tibetan identity in the coming period, but also that Tibetans are currently being used as the testing ground for broader policy of assimilation of “ethnic minorities” by the Chinese Communist authorities.
