Twenty-six Tibetans were taken into police custody after protests in Nepal’s capital city, Kathmandu. Hundreds of members of Kathmandu’s Tibetan community had gathered at the Boudhanath stupa on March 10, as they have done for decades, to mark the anniversary of Tibet’s 1959 National Uprising Day. The considerable massing of police force deployed to confront Tibetans in what has traditionally been a peaceful vigil is being seen as an indication of China’s heavy footprint on Nepal. There are particular concerns for the welfare of 15 Tibetans who held a brief protest outside the Chinese Consulate in Kathmandu on March 10. According to an observer, “It was terrible to watch. They were there for about five minutes before being dragged off quickly by police. They have been badly beaten by Nepalese police.”
