Panama City – Venerable Thubten Wangchen, Representative of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) for Latin America, and Tencho Gyatso, President of the International Campaign for Tibet (ICT), will visit Panama from September 30 through October 2 to strengthen engagement with government officials, civil society, and other key stakeholders and raise awareness about the situation in Tibet and China’s efforts to destroy Tibet’s distinct cultural, religious, and linguistic identity and heritage.
The visit will provide Panamanian audiences with opportunities to learn about the experiences of Tibetans who have been forced into exile after the Chinese occupation of Tibet. It will also offer them a space to engage directly with CTA and ICT representatives through discussions with elected officials, students, civil society organizations, journalists, and community leaders.
During the visit, they will screen the documentaries Free Tibet: Voices in Exile and The Sun Behind the Clouds in Panama City and Colón. Each screening will be followed by an opportunity for participants to speak with the Tibetan representatives about the documentary and explore the difficult issues it addresses.
“What is happening in Tibet is not only a Tibetan issue; it is a question of whether a people can preserve their language, faith, culture and identity in the face of systematic efforts to assimilate them,” said Tencho Gyatso, President of the International Campaign for Tibet. “Through this visit, we hope to build greater awareness of the situation inside Tibet and encourage meaningful conversations about human rights, religious freedom and the fundamental right of Tibetans to preserve their identity.”
The Tibetan representatives will also seek to build support for the Tibetan people’s fundamental rights and democratic institutions and mobilize support for a resumption in dialogue between His Holiness the Dalai Lama or the democratically elected Tibetan leaders and the Chinese government.

The Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) is the government-in-exile of Tibet, which was invaded by China in 1949. Based in Dharamsala, India, the CTA provides services to Tibetan refugees, including education, healthcare, cultural and religious preservation, and community support. As Tibet’s government-in-exile, the CTA advocates internationally for the political, religious, and cultural rights of the people of Tibet.

Ciudad de Panamá, 29 de septiembre de 2026 – El Venerable Thubten Wangchen, representante de Su Santidad el Dalái Lama y de la Administración Central Tibetana (CTA) para América Latina, y Tencho Gyatso, presidenta de la Campaña Internacional por el Tíbet (ICT), visitarán Panamá del 30 de septiembre al 2 de octubre con el objetivo de fortalecer el diálogo con funcionarios gubernamentales, representantes de la sociedad civil y otros actores clave, así como para crear conciencia sobre la situación en el Tíbet y los esfuerzos de China por destruir la identidad, el patrimonio cultural, religioso y lingüístico distintivos del Tíbet.
La visita brindará al público panameño oportunidades para conocer las experiencias de los tibetanos que se han visto obligados a vivir en el exilio tras la ocupación china del Tíbet. Asimismo, ofrecerá un espacio para interactuar directamente con representantes de la CTA y de ICT mediante conversaciones con funcionarios electos, estudiantes, organizaciones de la sociedad civil, periodistas y líderes comunitarios.
Durante la visita, se proyectarán en Ciudad de Panamá y Colón los documentales Free Tibet: Voices in Exile y The Sun Behind the Clouds. Después de cada proyección, los participantes tendrán la oportunidad de conversar con los representantes tibetanos sobre los documentales y profundizar los difíciles temas que abordan.
“Lo que está ocurriendo en el Tíbet no es únicamente un asunto tibetano; se trata de determinar si un pueblo puede preservar su idioma, su fe, su cultura y su identidad frente a los esfuerzos sistemáticos por asimilarlo”, afirmó Tencho Gyatso, presidenta de la Campaña Internacional por el Tíbet. “A través de esta visita, esperamos generar una mayor conciencia sobre la situación dentro del Tíbet y fomentar conversaciones significativas sobre los derechos humanos, la libertad religiosa y el derecho fundamental de los tibetanos a preservar su identidad”.
Los representantes tibetanos también buscarán generar apoyo a los derechos fundamentales y las instituciones democráticas del pueblo tibetano, así como promover la reanudación del diálogo entre Su Santidad el Dalái Lama, o sus líderes tibetanos elegidos democráticamente, y el Gobierno chino.
