The International Campaign for Tibet (ICT) has learned with great sadness that Professor Dr. Christian Schwarz-Schilling, former German Federal Minister and Parliamentarian, passed away on April 6, 2026, at the age of 95. Professor Dr. Schwarz-Schilling was known for his international mediation and conflict prevention work through his Schwarz-Schilling Foundation, and for his support of Tibetan-Chinese dialogue. From 2006 to 2007, he served as High Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina, where he oversaw the civilian implementation of the Dayton Agreement.

In 2013, His Holiness the Dalai Lama presented the prestigious Light of Truth Award of the ICT to Professor Dr. Schwarz-Schilling, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the public understanding of Tibet and the fight for human rights and democratic freedoms for the Tibetan people.

ICT President Tencho Gyatso said, “Professor Christian Schwarz-Schilling was a steadfast friend and supporter of the Tibetan people. He generously shared his vast experience, his knowledge and insight to find a peaceful solution of the Tibet-China conflict. He will not be forgotten. His legacy will be deeply cherished.”
